HIGHLIGHTS
Travelling with children can be a tricky and demanding affair – especially when you want to take in some sightseeing. Unlike the majority of private tours in Split, family-friendly walking tour is a perfect family experience, customized to cater for families of all ages. With my 19-year-long teaching career, I understand what it takes to keep children engaged. I find it easy to bond with children, making sure they get as much value out of the tour as the mums and dads!
Come and join me for a fun, engaging educational experience, full of family moments keeping the young ones curious and parents smiling.
ITINERARY
We start our tour at the main Riva waterfront where I’ll share an overview of the city of Split. We begin with the story of the Emperor Diocletian and how the city developed from the retirement home of this once important Roman ruler. The bronze model map of the palace and the city, located on the waterfront, really helps us to understand the city as a whole – especially for kids as they try to match certain landmarks with what they can spot on the model.
After about 60 minutes into our tour, we stop at another map of the palace, giving kids a chance to show what they remember seeing along the way – which often becomes a competition between family members. From the Riva we enter the substructures of the palace, which young kids often find spooky and cool as they simply love running within these huge corridors.
At the main Roman square, Peristyle Square, we become face-to-face with the 3,500 year-old Egyptian Sphinx. Often on this square, you can spot fully-equipped Roman guards bearing helmets and swords – the perfect opportunity to grab a family photo together.

We wrap up the tour with a previously prepared quiz or if there are younger kids on the tour, we delve into some drawing or colouring sheets. On hot days of the tour, we might pop in a café for a drink or snack, doing the quiz in the shade. Parents on this tour really appreciate the flexible itinerary. Equally I always take into account my little participants may be tired, have shorter attention spans than adults and therefore it’s important to constantly feed their curiosity.
Upon request, I also organize creative workshops for children at the museums/galleries in Split. This is a great combination for parents who wish to take time out touring the gallery with me, while the little ones curiously delve into creative clay / charcoal workshops with lecturers who are specially trained to work with children. It always surprises me to see some of my little guests leave Split with really impressive works of art produced during the tour. As you can appreciate, due to the high demand, these workshops need to be booked well in advance.

What others think
Wonderful tour for our family
(…) Jelena has an appreciation of and affinity for the English language (she teaches English during the school year) and shows great interest in learning about the visitors who use her as a guide. (…) Because Jelena is a teacher, she had a wonderful demeanor with my two daughters (9 and 11 years at the time of our visit). She treated them with respect and seemed to enjoy having children with her for the day. My girls had a terrific time with her and said after our tour with Jelena that she was one of their favorite private guides we had ever had! She was professional, warm, attentive to our needs, and taught us a lot about Croatia of which she was very proud. Within a few days following our day with Jelena, she sent me a follow-up email, including some pictures she had taken of us on the excursion with her. This shows that she does not forget visitors once they have departed. I highly recommend using Jelena as a guide who can customize your tour to your liking. She will take good care of you!

Such a wonderful tour guide!
My family and I spent three days touring Split with Jelena Vrancic. Jelena was just wonderful. We were eight in our group including grandparents in their 70’s, several middle agers, and three children ages 13, 10 and 7. Jelena kept everyone engaged and interested, and was always so cheerful, kind and upbeat. For the kids she brought coloring pages and pencils, and on the last day we had a little quiz to fill out about what we learned with her. Such a great way to wrap things up (I am a teacher..so perhaps biased on this one!) We toured Diocletian’s palace, the Mestrovic gallery (recommended!), the synagogue, green market, ethnographic museum and several other places. We were six weeks traveling in Europe with multiple guides in multiple countries, and Jelena was the best one by far. My seven year old just told me to give her “one thousand stars”. Thank you Jelena!

Welcoming to small children
We had a wonderful time touring Split with Jelena. She was knowledgeable and informative, and she was also incredibly kind and affectionate towards our 11-month-old son. She was exceedingly a accommodating as well, stopping to sit at one point so I could nurse my son in the middle of the tour.
We HIGHLY recommend Jelena for any families travelling with small children. She seemed genuinely glad to have our little guy along for the tour, and even offered to carry him at one point. And he adored her as well!
