We first learn about the Diocletian’s Palace with all its major highlights – the Substructures, the Vestibule and The Peristyle Square. As we wander through the delightfully charming streets and piazzas, learn more about this vibrant city of Split and the wonderful outdoor lifestyle that the people of Dalmatia enjoy.
ITINERARY
Experience the real Dalmatia joining me on a private tour through Diocletian’s Palace. Explore the spectacular palace- a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1979. The palace was built as a retreat for the Roman emperor Diocletian, and has expanded ever since. The winding cobbled alleys, delightful architecture and narrow streets are a joy to explore.
With locals still living within its walls, it remains a present-day, breathing monument of one era and a “must see” when meeting Split for the first time.
We take a step into the rich cultural heritage of this vibrant city with its numerous palaces, squares and lively markets & artisan shops. Share a taste of local life enjoying food and wine tasting in a top-quality wine bar/restaurant located next to the western wall of the palace.

The tasting includes three wines which are carefully paired with local food: marinated prawns & fresh cottage cheese/curd cheese, pancetta & semi-mature goat cheese and prosciutto & mature cow cheese.
The first wine is Debit – indigenous variety; very light, white wine.
The second wine is another indigenous Croatian variety – Crljenak, known as Zinfandel. Maybe you didn’t know, but the home of Zinfandel IS Croatia!
The third wine is Plavac mali – the indigenous variety that we are most proud of. It is a full-bodied red wine from the peninsula of Pelješac.
The tasting is done by a certified sommelier. All the wines are local and you will have an opportunity to learn about the long tradition of wine making in the region of Dalmatia.
This history runs deep in the veins of the winemakers of today, many of which have been producing quality wines for generations.
The Illyrians ruled the region 2500 years ago and in Illyrian caves in Nakovanj, Pelješac for instance, ceramic wine glasses were discovered, handed to the Illyrians by the Greeks as a payment to pass the channel between Pelješac and Korčula. It is therefore believed, that wine was produced and consumed in the region at this time.

Dream day in Split
Jelena is an engaging, knowledgeable and just fun to be around tour guide. I felt like we were with a friend who was taking us around their home city. I never felt like we were on a scripted tour. The Diocletian’s Palace was magical & Mestrovic Gallery absolutely stunning. And the food tasting was beyond my expectations – I booked it as a surprise for my family and thought we would get a few bites along with a glass of wine, but Jelena took us to a lovely, tucked away restaurant where we sat at a beautiful table in a private courtyard and tasted the food of Croatia – artisan meats and cheeses, squid ink bread and a seafood tasting plate that was beyond words.

Informative and tasty tour of Split
My husband and I had the pleasure of spending some time in Split during our vacation in October. The day started out with a steady and hard rain but Jelena was undaunted, we switched some things around and made the best of it. By the middle of the day the sun was out and we had spent some quality time with the sights, history and food stuffs of Croatia. We ended the day at the Mestrovic gallery having been exposed to an amazing artist, overlooking a gorgeous view. It was the best of a tour guide experience, learning about a country through its food and culture with an accomplished and flexible guide.

Informative and passionate
We spent an enjoyable morning with Jelena exploring the Diocletian Palace and surrounds in Split. She was knowledgeable, personable and clearly someone who enjoys her work as a tour guide showing off her city. She provided a personal insight into Split as well as information about the history and architecture of the area. The small group approach (only the two of us with Jelena) was well worth the money, particularly as we passed many large groups struggling to engage with their guide and the sights. The added extras of chocolate and sweet tasting also added to the occasion. A great tour!
