HIGHLIGHTS
Join me as I will lead you through this amazing Croatian coastal city on The Best Of Split Walking Tour! As a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, the Diocletian’s Palace has an endless range of feel-good restaurants, bars and cafes, frequented by locals and tourists alike. The winding cobbled alleys, beautiful historic architecture and narrow streets with artisan shops are a real joy to explore.
ITINERARY
We kick-off in style with the magnificent Diocletian’s Palace right in the heart of the Old Town. This takes us back to where the story begins to the times of the ancient Roman Empire. In the fourth century A.D., when the Roman emperor Diocletian retired, he built a vast residence for his golden years here in his native Dalmatia. When Rome fell, the palace was abandoned. Eventually, a medieval town sprouted from its abandoned shell. And, to this day, the maze of narrow alleys — literally Diocletian’s hallways at one point in time — makes up the core of Split. Today’s residents are actually living in a Roman emperor’s palace and we are very proud of that. Bustling and lively, the heart of Split belongs within the walls of Diocletian’s palace.
The tour sets off at the main waterfront Riva and from there, through the southern gate, we will enter the substructures of the palace, which are a prime example of great Roman architecture.

From the Diocletian’s cellars we continue to grand Peristyle square and Vestibule – the dramatically domed entrance hall to the private rooms of the emperor. Today, it has become a spot where you can often be treated to the tunes of local Acapella singers singing traditional Dalmatian folk songs. Vestibule has amazing acoustics so stopping here and enjoying some tunes is a must.
The tour also includes visits to former emperor’s mausoleum (today’s cathedral) and Jupiter’s Temple which was converted into the baptistery.
As we stroll further along, hear stories of not only the past, but equally contemporary Split. Really absorb what makes this atmospheric and exciting city tick. Discover how the city’s inhabitants lead a feel-good outdoor lifestyle throughout the year spending time at numerous squares, or on the main waterfront Riva.
Later we explore parts of Split outside the walls of the Palace. Especially beautiful is People’s Square that the locals simply call piazza. Some of the most beautiful examples of Venetian architecture and Art Nouveau can be admired here.
Coming towards the final stages, we end our tour back to square one where we started – at the enchanting Riva seafront. Arguably the perfect spot in the city to relaxingly watch the world go by, gaze into the crystal clear Adriatic Sea – not forgetting a drink in hand.

You Can’t Design a More Perfect Guide
We’ve not only taken tours all over the world, but I’m a tour guide myself based in NYC. There’s no advice I can give her. It starts with the personality, then adaptability, and finishes with new friends having coffee on a small square. Actually it finished with a restaurant she recommended that produced the best fish of the trip. Jelena is funny, smart, and may I say even beautiful (that helps with the attention spans). And she knows her stuff. We came loaded with questions and she had all the answers. You can only do this properly with small private groups. You get to know someone, and get closer to the culture. I feel like I scored a home run with this one.

Jelena is the epitome of excellence!
She is very personable, knowledgeable and beyond professional. Her English is impeccable and she is extremely warm, inviting and offers and unforgettable tour of Split. She is passionate about sharing the love of her country, and adds personal touches about its history. She spent the entire day with us and by the end of the tour, it felt as if we were life long friends. We began our tour with her meeting us at our cruise ship and we ended with a drink in a local establishment. Here she recommended the names of local dishes for us to try during our visit. I, undoubtedly, recommend booking a tour with Jelena as you will not be disappointed.

Fjaka
/fee-ah-ka/
noun
A psychophysical state of mind when there is an aspiration for nothing and to do nothing. It is a common mistake to take fjaka as laziness, though unlike the latter; fjaka is a sublime state of mind and body to which all humanity aspires. In countries like India and elsewhere fjaka is being achieved through long-term starvation and meditation, in Dalmatia it is simply a gift from God.
